{Magic of the Mundane}

Today, I am joining Sofia over at Sofia's Ideas for Magic of the Mundane. I so love this idea because it totally falls in line with my desire to get back to simple. It can be a picture, a poem or song, a short video or anything else that celebrates the Magic. So often, we get caught up in "where we're going" that we forget to look at the beauty of "where we are."

I love this picture, for so many reasons.  This is my oldest son with his wrestling coach.  This picture was taken at the sports banquet.  My son graduates in June.  I'm having lots of issues with this whole "growing up" thing.

When my son first started wrestling his freshman year, he was maybe 5'3" and weighed all of 103 pounds.  Coach was huge compared to my boy and he dubbed my son PeeWee.  Everyone on the wrestling team is allowed to call him that, but not his parents.  Now look at them. At 6'2" he's not so PeeWee any more.  But he still admires and respects his coach.  They really do have an amazing relationship.

After the banquet, Coach came up to me and told me how much he "loves that boy" of mine.  What I love is watching them together...the humor, the respect, the friendship and the possible glimpses of the man my son will become.

This man has been coaching at the same high school since 1979.  He was there when my sister and I went there.  He's retired twice and keeps coming back. He takes his responsibilities very seriously.  He loves those kids and I was so glad he was there for my boy....I wonder if he wants to go to college with him....It would make this Mama feel better.

  2. What a wonderful thing to have a coach so well loved in your son's life! This growing up thing IS hard... harder maybe in some moments for us than for them, eh mama? HUGS!

  3. " I'm having lots of issues with this whole "growing up" thing." Ugh - that when straight to my heart. I so empathize with you. I know I will have major empty nest syndrome!

I've always wanted my children to have other adults in their lives that they could have a strong relationship with, and also other houses where they could feel at home. I think its invaluable that your son has this with someone you also admire and trust.

Thank you, Melissa, for participating again in Magic of the Mundane! :)

  5. I am so there with you Melissa. Can you believe these little babies that we have given our whole life for have the gall to grow up and then leave us? The nerve!
Love the photo of your son and coach together. My huband has coached baseball for over twenty years and looks on all the children as 'his' children. There is such a special bond between them, it's a beautiful thing!

  6. What a great, magical moment! I am so glad I have many, many years before Bunny is "grown up". But I know it will be here in a blink of an eye. sigh.

  7. Oh, "the growing up thing". It's tough.

It sounds like your son is so blessed to have this man in his life. Positive adult role models are so vital to our children's growth and development.

Love the picture and thanks for sharing this sentimental reflectio.

  8. Love this post!! You son is so lucky to have this bond with such an awesome coach. I honestly feel that there are "good" and "bad" ones out there. And they can "make" or "break" a child. Fortunately, this one seems to rock! My husband still talks of his great bond with his wrestling coach from high school. And he is now back in the schools subbing and helping with the PeeWee wrestling program! It's great to keep these "seasoned" coaches around. The kids really respect them more and learn from them!

  9. It amazes me how both of my children have had special teachers in their lives. I appreciated all they did and it's nice to see them in the community! You have quite the handsome son :)

  10. Teachers and coaches really do make such a huge impact on kids's lives, don't they? I'm so glad that impact has been a positive one for your son. :)

  11. Love this post!! I myself can totally relate, I had a dance teacher who played that wonderful role in my life, in fact 37 years after we first met (me three years old and her 18 years old) we are still very dear friends.

Such a wonderful impact these amazing people make on our lives.

  13. Great post. I think mentors (coaches, teachers, counselors, etc.) are such great things during the high school years. It's wonderful that he got the opportunity to have a coach who obviously cares so much about young people. I'm sure I'll feel the same way you do when my kids are about to graduate... parenting is such a bittersweet thing.
