{Magic of the Mundane}

Today, I am joining Sofia over at Sofia's Ideas for Magic of the Mundane. I so love this idea because it totally falls in line with my desire to get back to simple. It can be a picture, a poem or song, a short video or anything else that celebrates the Magic. So often, we get caught up in "where we're going" that we forget to look at the beauty of "where we are."

I must confess that I've been away from these posts for a while.  I got into that "busy" mode and just didn't take the time remind myself how important these "mundane" bits of magic are....until last night.

Car Guy has gone on another business trip...Peru this time.  I had to get up at "O'Dark Early" to get him to the airport yesterday...6 A.M.  Ugh. Saw him off, went home and crawled back into bed to catch just a little more sleep....for about an hour.  And last night, sleep was elusive as well.  Isn't it amazing how you get so used to that presence in the bed next to you that when it's not there, neither is sleep?  I've been sleeping next to this guy for around twenty-one years. I jokingly refer to his body next to mine as the "lump" that hogs the covers, or my "heater." But when that lump/heater isn't there, things just aren't "right." I miss the careless hand on my hip, the occasional foot tangled with mine, the warmth that I can snuggle into on chilly mornings because he's pulled all the blankets over to his side of the bed...He's a snuggler and that's how he ensures that I snuggle back. It's just one of those things I take for granted until it's not there. When he gets home, I'll be heading to SAFF (3 days left!!!!) so I won't see him for a week...I hope I have a bed to myself this weekend...or someone who won't freak out if I accidentally try to cuddle.

Birthdays

This past Friday, I celebrated my forty-fourth birthday.
And as birthdays go, it was pretty good.
I had a wonderful dinner with my family prepared for me by my Sainted Mother.  In my forty-four years, she has NEVER missed a birthday....ever. There were tons of birthday wishes from friends and family and even a phone call from New Orleans from Annie and Suz...love you guys! On Sunday, my Dad came up and took me, Car Guy and Number Two Son to lunch.  We had a lovely time.  And even though Number One Son couldn't be there, he didn't forget me.  I think this is possibly my most favorite facebook post ever.
It really is the simple things that make a birthday grand!

Connections

This weekend was all about connections for me, of the family kind.  My lovely cousin Katie was married on Saturday - to her high school sweetheart - after a long separation.  They went their separate ways for college and lost touch.  He married someone else, had children, and things didn't work out. Move forward to present day and facebook and who reconnects?  Yup.  And the magic was still there.  It's just so sweet...connections.
The beautiful couple!
Katie is my cousin from my maternal Grandmother's side of the family.  We actually only met a few years back.  My Grandmother was one of ten (yes I said ten) children, so the cousins got a bit scattered.  This weekend, I met more cousins.  Maybe we'll get to know each other, maybe not.  But it's nice to know they're out there...connections.

I also thought it was pretty neat that I was down there for a wedding on my mother's side of the family, but I stayed in a house that belonged to my paternal Grandparents...connections.

As I was getting ready, I was texting with my sister...the conversations we have...
Yes, I admit it. I wore a girdle shape wear. A girl's got to do what a girl's got to do.

But this text is just part of that connection.  My sister and I spent many summer weeks at this house. We searched for shells and sand dollars, played cribbage, went fishing, built houses out of cards, played board games and probably drove each other nuts.  But I look around this house and I remember.  And I smile. And I know that I am the sum of the parts that these connections make and they enrich me and make me whole.

I returned home yesterday to Car Guy.  He's home from Dubai.  He had a wonderful trip, but is glad to be home again.  And I'm glad to have him home...connections.

It's been a couple of weeks since I've done a Magic of the Mundane post.  It's not that I haven't seen it, it's that I've seen so many little moments of it everywhere...the excitement in one college student's face at the new adventure ahead, the hug between brothers as they say good bye, the love and pride in a father's face as he let's go.  All these things fill me with joy and wonder.  But these are momentous moments too.  Then this weekend I had a lovely moment...almost all weekend long.

My older sister lives on the west coast...California to be more specific.  She moved out there about 14 years ago.  I miss my sister a lot.  We are so different, yet so similar.  We understand each other...most of the time ;)  My sister has been a knitter for years.  I have several scarves she's made me over the years.  I love them and wear them regularly every winter.  My sister decided that she wanted to learn how to crochet.  She bought a magazine or two and found a pattern she really liked. It's an "easy pattern" and as she's learned the basics, she decided to give it a go....and proceeded to get VERY frustrated...as in ARGH!  frustrated.  So we used FaceTime, texting, videos and emails and my sister is now crocheting her poncho.  It was so wonderful that we were able to do this.  I was able to help my big sister learn something new all the away on the other side of the country. It made me remember how much fun we used to have and it was neat to be able to do it again.  It was different but the same, but always special.

I've been away from this space for a bit.  I've missed it.  But sometimes we have to pick what we can do without for little bit and get done what we need to get done.  This summer if flying by.  I'm trying to grab hold of it with both hands and it keeps slipping through my fingers. But there are a few things that I am enjoying.

One of them is watching my oldest son turn into a man. Watching him have intelligent conversations with adults and holding his own with topics like politics and the economy.  Listening to him debate a topic while listening respectfully to someone else's point of view and arguing against it thoughtfully and maturely.  Then turning around and watching him chase his three year old cousin across the yard with unmasked glee and tossing him in the air when caught...oh those giggles make my toes tingle with giddiness! Then watching him struggle to show his father that he is growing up and does have a valid point of view...that is such a struggle for his dad as well...letting go of his little boy. It all melts my heart and breaks it at the same time.

 I've also enjoyed spending time with great friends.  Lots of late night laughter, great food and wine and a support group that can't be beat. I have been truly blessed by the friends I have...always there with a joke, a smile, a glass of wine and a hug...and occasionally a few felonious suggestions that put everything into perspective.

But the thing I've enjoyed the most this summer is the time with family. We have been deeply immersed with visits - both coming and going and it has helped ground me during all this change....and then.....
One of my adorable nieces.
there is the fact that I am currently getting to snuggle this sweet little bundle...smell that baby smell and watch her giggle and coo....Life is pretty dang good!

Home....that word has some very powerful magic. It can be a building, a place, a person or all of the above, but it is truly where the heart is.  I spent the weekend away from home.  I had an amazing time with a wonderful group of ladies. The location was perfect.  The women were incredible.  The time away was needed and thoroughly enjoyed.  And after it was all said and done, coming home was complete bliss. Just to be with my people, in my building, in my place.  There is much to be said for coming home.

Please forgive the blurry picture.  He wasn't in the mood for photos.
There are two pets that are a big part of the daily "going ons" in our house. They are definitely more than just pets, but members of the family and I am happy to report that the grey one up there is hogging the bed again, chasing his brother around the house at ungodly hours of the night and generally being a rambunctious kitty again. Never again will I take for granted the snuggles in the morning, the purring that vibrates his whole body, the begging for lettuce (of all things) and the running around he does.  He gave us quite a scare a couple of weeks ago and now is getting completely spoiled by all the members of this family.  So go love your pet....you'll feel better too.

This week is definitely going to be an "in the moment" week.  My oldest baby is graduating Saturday.  He's growing up so quickly!  That's what I want to celebrate.  The everyday going ons of raising a child.  The good, the bad and the ugly.  Try to enjoy and cherish EVERY moment because they go from this....

To this.....

before you even know it.

So enjoy the bath times, the bedtime stories, the spilled milk, the restless nights and everything that goes along with being a mama because it is so fleeting and precious.  Get all the hugs and kisses while you can and don't worry about the sticky mouths and dirty hands when they reach for that hug or kiss.  Those gestures are priceless.

Please forgive this mama if there just a few more tears around here.  They are happy tears full of pride for the young man he is turning into.

So you see that really sexy boot up there?  That's mine....it's new.  They only gave me one, but I'm actually quite grateful that I don't have a matching pair.  Something you might not know about me is that my parents wasted A LOT (in my opinion) of money on dance lessons on me when I was a child. First of all, because I hated it...well, not the dancing so much, but the dance teacher...another story, for another day.  Secondly, because I'm about as graceful as a pig on ice.  Seriously....that boot up there is proof. This is what happens when you fall asleep on the sofa, wake up at 1:00 a.m. and remember that you need to let the neighbor's dogs in the house for the evening.  You go across the street, half asleep, and don't get your foot completely on the step, roll you ankle and fall on your own foot. Thank goodness for the sweet, strapping young man I gave birth to that got me back home and in bed...Needless to say it was a fun thing to explain to Car Guy in the morning when I told him I really need to go see a doctor....yup, one foot, two broken bones...Can you say talent?  That's me....I'm that kid that spent all her charm school money on bubble gum. What does this have to do with Magic of the Mundane and appreciating the every day?  I REALLY appreciate walking without crutches and without pain.  I appreciate sleeping through the night without waking up every time I roll over. I now truly appreciate the everyday that I took for granted. Think about it for a minute...what if you couldn't walk on your own....fix a meal without wearing yourself out...drive a car....so many things that are everyday occurrences that are just a part of life...you know, like walking up a step without falling on your face....oh wait, you can do that?  Must be nice :)

By the way, I am fine if not slightly frustrated.  I should be back to normal...well normal for me...in about 8 to 12 weeks.  I apologize now if blogging and commenting are sporadic.  Be careful out there and watch where you're going.  You never know what might jump out at you!

P.S. There was no alcohol involved and I wasn't chewing gum...I'm just that clumsy.

Shhh.....do you hear that?  That's right...it's nothing....it's quiet....not a sound.

That quiet is something that we sometimes take for granted.  We don't always have to have a three ring circus to entertain us.  Sometimes the best moments are the ones spent quietly.  That moment with a loved one before the alarm clock goes off.  The kiss on the forehead as someone sleeps. The time alone as the sun sets. The first cup of coffee or a single glass of wine with a good book.  Sharing a movie, a story, a smile or a look of understanding.

In the craziness of everyday life, we sometimes forget the beauty and need for quiet or silence and the opportunity to just be.  Reality will remind us that it's out there soon enough.  I was reminded at 8:15 this morning when the system went down and we dealt with 9 million calls...phones ringing loudly, constantly, jarringly. But once everything was fixed, I sat in my office, closed my eyes, took a deep breath and was.  That peaceful, quiet moment was magically perfect. Try it.  Go on...close your eyes and just be.....For me, it helps put everything in perspective...just don't do it for too long. Someone might think you've fallen asleep.

Unplugged...As most of you know, raising children is not always easy.  Some days are more difficult than others.  I'm here to tell you that older children are not always easier.  Sometimes they have bad days.  Sometimes, even though one is almost a junior in high school and the other leaves for college in the fall, they can act as petty as kindegarteners. Some days I get to hear what "he" did and then what "he" did to "get even."  Really?!?!  Seriously?!?!  How old are they again? Hmmm.....well, even this mama can reach her breaking point and get "feed up."  When that happens, things change.  If I reach "that" point, I don't yell and I don't ground. I enact change. So this past Sunday afternoon, while they were bickering and not listening to their mama, things changed.  Suddenly there wasn't a cord connecting the Xbox to the TV.  And why is there a password on the computer? Hmmm......maybe there's been enough time with electronics and we need to learn to communicate again....maybe?  And as I cooked dinner, I heard the distinct sound of a pool table in use and laughter as the "smack talk" began and after dinner, some basketball outside. It wasn't perfect, but it's a start. Just a little time spent together unplugged and if there is bickering, at lease it isn't over an inanimate object that sucks away time.  Seeing their faces, hearing their laughter...that's magic...even if mama is a mean old lady.

{Magic of the Mundane}

The mail...we all get it.  Mostly it looks a little something like this...
A collection of bills, sales flyers, the occasional magazine, etc. Nothing particularly exciting.  When I was a child, I loved getting the mail...just to see if there was anything in there for me.  I had a grandmother that was wonderful about sending me little notes in the mail.  She was my first pen pal.  When I was too small to read them, my Sainted Mother would read her notes to me.  Then, as I got older we'd write to each other fairly regularly, even though she only live 45 minutes away. I had a couple of other pen pals over the years and then there were the letters from my "first love" when I was thirteen.  I remember the excitement of opening that metal door and flipping through it all until I saw the envelope with my name on it.

When I eventually became an adult, the mail kind of lost it's luster for me.  Most of my friends and I email or talk on the phone, so the mail became something that I didn't really enjoy. It was mostly junk mail and bills...basically someone asking for the money that I felt like I didn't have.  Until now.   After months of waiting, Number One Son got a couple of large envelopes, one from Charlotte and one from Greenville ...news we'd all been anxiously waiting for....

In the fall, my oldest will became an East Carolina University Pirate...that makes this Mama VERY proud and so excited for him and the opportunities this will bring him. And the bonus? Last Friday, I fell in love with the mail all over again...until that first tuition bill comes...Yikes!

{Magic of the Mundane} - What I've learned

Today, I am joining Sofia over at Sofia's Ideas for Magic of the Mundane. I so love this idea because it totally falls in line with my desire to get back to simple. It can be a picture, a poem or song, a short video or anything else that celebrates the Magic. What I've Learned....
* Tomorrow is not "just another day."  It's the passage of time that goes so quickly.
* You can't say "I love you" or hug someone too much.
* Kindness carries more weight with people.
* Manners do matter.
* Some four letter words are the best words...Love, Hope, Home.
* Smiles can last all day in someone else's mind.
* Tears heal...and so do hugs.
* Honesty might sting but lying always hurts.
* Hopes and dreams can get you through the day.
* Friends are part of the "good stuff" in life.
* Laughter and tears can go together...and feel so wonderful.
* Holding someone's hand can give you both amazing strength.
* Attitude affects everything.
* Painful words can't be taken back, but good ones should always be shared.
* This won't last forever....enjoy now.
* Love might not conquer all but it makes everything else a little easier to deal with.

Hope this helps get you through your week!

I love this picture, for so many reasons.  This is my oldest son with his wrestling coach.  This picture was taken at the sports banquet.  My son graduates in June.  I'm having lots of issues with this whole "growing up" thing.

When my son first started wrestling his freshman year, he was maybe 5'3" and weighed all of 103 pounds.  Coach was huge compared to my boy and he dubbed my son PeeWee.  Everyone on the wrestling team is allowed to call him that, but not his parents.  Now look at them. At 6'2" he's not so PeeWee any more.  But he still admires and respects his coach.  They really do have an amazing relationship.

After the banquet, Coach came up to me and told me how much he "loves that boy" of mine.  What I love is watching them together...the humor, the respect, the friendship and the possible glimpses of the man my son will become.

This man has been coaching at the same high school since 1979.  He was there when my sister and I went there.  He's retired twice and keeps coming back. He takes his responsibilities very seriously.  He loves those kids and I was so glad he was there for my boy....I wonder if he wants to go to college with him....It would make this Mama feel better.

Slightly off kilter, but that's my family.  This picture is sort of a tradition.  Every year, we line the kids up at my in-law's house and take a picture.  My boys are the ones in the green shirt and blue shirt. You can see my sister-in-law in the reflection of the door.  We got together for Easter, as we have every year.  This has been going on since before Car Guy and I ever started dating. As time has passed, the group has gotten larger...now the kids are getting larger.  Soon they will be off at college, but we'll still get together at Easter and there will still be lots of food and laughter and family.  There is so much magic in family and spending time together. Hearing laughter and squeals of not so little children running around outside. And knowing that the foundation is there, as well as the friendships, and these gatherings will continue even after we are gone.

{Magic of the Mundane}

This looks like a pretty little dish and bowl.  Very pretty, but nothing over the top.  Just a dish and bowl to put some food on it. Most of us have several of these and we use them everyday.  Sometimes we notice them more than others....like when the plate or bowl are not big enough to hold what we want, or maybe they are too big.  But most of the time we just use them, wash them and put them away. No big deal. This one is very special. This one was given to me by my Sainted Mother.  That in itself makes it special because she was thinking of me.
But that's not the only reason why it's special....She made this for me in her pottery class. She even put the pretty green leaves, the center design and orange trim on it so that it would match my everyday dishes. She was thinking of me when she was doing something she always wanted to learn how to do.

Now I know you're thinking "Well gee, Melissa.  That's very nice and not the least bit mundane."  And you'd be right.  But you see, what I'm celebrating - the magic, if you will - is what so many of us have and take for granted, so that they seem mundane - Our Moms.  Ask anyone who doesn't have one, or who has lost one, and they will tell you how special these women are.  But we get so bogged down in life and take for granted all the things, little and big, that they do for us that we sometimes don't even notice.  And then we get something like this plate and bowl and we are reminded how special they are. Sure, there are days where they drive us nuts , but guess what - that's their job. They are supposed to be annoying, nosy and embarrassing. So today, just for a moment, stop and think about what your life would be like without them. Think about what they give us and where would we be without them. And know that all of it comes from a very special place - their heart.  Think about your own children and what you go through for them, what you put up with, what you give up, how you feel about them, how you'd take on the world for them and know that you have someone that feels that way about you...It's special and just a little overwhelming, isn't it?

Have you called your mom today?  Or better yet, hugged her and told her you love her? Give it a shot, it will make her day.

Oh dear....isn't she the cutest? There is absolutely nothing mundane about my adorable niece Piper...And how about the rainbow bright outfit?  Nothing mundane about that either, if I do say so myself.  I made that little outfit for her for Christmas...not that she really cares.  She's a baby. It's just something to keep her covered and warm.  Not much else. In fact, I bet if she had things her way, she wouldn't have anything on at all because, let's face it, babies do love to be naked. So to her, it's very mundane.  This type of thing doesn't take on any importance until we're older and other people teach us the importance of our appearance and "being cute."  And at some point, she might even look at that picture and think "What in the world was my mother thinking, putting that outfit on me...I look like a deranged fairy,."  But later...when she's older...maybe when she's pregnant with her own child...she'll hold this little outfit in her hands and remember the crazy aunt that made it for her and then she'll remember other things - Like the hugs and kisses; the family beach trips; the loud, older cousins that adored her; and possibly so much more.  And then, suddenly that outfit won't seem so crazy or mundane and maybe she'll even put it on her little girl and carry the love forward...Just a little family magic.

Today I am celebrating that couple up there.  That's me and Car Guy. What I'm celebrating is the mundane day to day life that we share....the laundry, the dishes, the bills.  You see, that man and I will celebrate 19 years of marriage next month and a little over 21 years of being a couple.  By some standards, we've been together for a looong time and by others, not so much.  But we keep plugging along.  I'm so fortunate to find a man that is so committed to us and our family.  I'm not trying to paint a rosy picture.  It hasn't always been easy, but he's always there.

On paper, we might not make a lot of sense.  I'm that dorky, hippie chick and he's...well, he's my Car Guy.  He loves cars, mechanical thing, video games, etc.  Me, not so much.  I prefer quiet, reading, crochet and knitting.  Where we meet is that our family is everything to us.  We'd prefer to be at home with our family than out and about.  We are both homebodies.  We love our friends and love entertaining....at home. We make it work and try not to let the small stuff get to us. We don't give up on each other and in this day and age, that's magic.

The picture is because I just couldn't resist.  I mean, come on, let's face it -  that is just too dang cute!  I couldn't get those cats to do that again if I tried! What I'm celebrating today is you - my readers, my followers and my friends - because you are so wonderful and understanding.  I try to keep this a pretty positive place.  I try to take the not so great and find a funny spin to it.  I try, but sometimes my optimism escapes me and I just get plain ol' frustrated. You allow me those moments.  No judgement, just support and understanding.  You know that at some point every mama has to "get it out" and you let me. So thank you for that.  Thank you for the support, the kind comments and for being there.  Thanks for being the magic that keeps me coming back and making all this feel worth while.  Have a great week!

{Magic of the Mundane}

This is about as mundane as you can get.  The morning ritual of coffee.  The mug is Car Guy's.  The coffee is from Ecuador. What makes this so special is that Car Guy bought me the coffee....he didn't go to our local grocery store to get it.  He actually had to go to Ecuador for business.  He's been gone for a week.  He came home safely and brought me delicious rich coffee and some amazingly decadent dark chocolate...Having him home after a week and sharing a cup of coffee with him yesterday morning was definitely magic.
