{Magic of the Mundane}

Today, I am joining Sofia over at Sofia's Ideas for Magic of the Mundane. I so love this idea because it totally falls in line with my desire to get back to simple. It can be a picture, a poem or song, a short video or anything else that celebrates the Magic. So often, we get caught up in "where we're going" that we forget to look at the beauty of "where we are."

Shhh.....do you hear that?  That's right...it's nothing....it's quiet....not a sound.

That quiet is something that we sometimes take for granted.  We don't always have to have a three ring circus to entertain us.  Sometimes the best moments are the ones spent quietly.  That moment with a loved one before the alarm clock goes off.  The kiss on the forehead as someone sleeps. The time alone as the sun sets. The first cup of coffee or a single glass of wine with a good book.  Sharing a movie, a story, a smile or a look of understanding.

In the craziness of everyday life, we sometimes forget the beauty and need for quiet or silence and the opportunity to just be.  Reality will remind us that it's out there soon enough.  I was reminded at 8:15 this morning when the system went down and we dealt with 9 million calls...phones ringing loudly, constantly, jarringly. But once everything was fixed, I sat in my office, closed my eyes, took a deep breath and was.  That peaceful, quiet moment was magically perfect. Try it.  Go on...close your eyes and just be.....For me, it helps put everything in perspective...just don't do it for too long. Someone might think you've fallen asleep.

  1. Yes, quiet is magical. I especially appreciate it as a mother of two very young, very noisy little ones. So nice to just sit and hold a sleepy quiet little one who has gotten up before everyone else. With a quiet house and the birds just starting to wake up.

  2. Quiet.. blessed quiet! I closed eyes, breathed deeply.. and stopped pretty quickly because at 33 weeks pregnant I might actually fall asleep lol

  3. "...closed my eyes and just was"...oh I'm SO there with you.
Just sometimes I have to say stop the noise, and sit with quietness (not necessarily silence) and all is well again. Someone once told me it was re-booting the brain but I like to think of it as something less mechanical.
Have a good week, have quietness when you need it

  5. I awake anywhere from 3 to 4 a.m daily and have my quiet time with my Maker. I guard this time jealously and can become quite unfriendly if it is intruded upon. Having this time helps me function and deal with whatever the day has in store.

  6. ah silence, something so rare in these parts with two tots around! but yes, those fleeting moments are certainly appreciated when they do come about.... except those ones where the silence is the two tots up to mischief, it always seems to get too quiet during those moments of mischief :)

  7. Great post! So true - so many undervalue peace and quiet. If I could find a way to get up before my boys in the mornings and have some quiet to myself I know it would improve my days enormously. But, alas, they inherited my early wakings and it's just not possible right now. Enjoy you peace and quiet! And who cares if someone thinks you've fallen asleep? ;-)

  8. Silence is a necessary part of my life, I need it, I crave it and I try to make time for it daily, even if just for a minute or two.

  9. I love to just be, in silence, it is what keeps me going. So many people I know hate the silenc, the peace of just being. Great post my friend.

  11. What a great post. Thank you for the reminder! I think I'll get off the computer now & enjoy my cup of coffee with some knitting and watching the birds at the feeder before my little one starts calling for me!

  12. your post reminds me of the quiet after watching tv with a bunch of people (you know, when you have to turn it up because certain somebodies need to talk out loud all the time and you cannot hear the program anymore). the moment you turn it off, the quiet feels so good, a true relief.

  13. *Giggles* I love how you ended this, Melissa.

OMGosh!!! What I would not do for some quiet right now. Not just now, as in this moment, or as in today, but as in these last few weeks. Papa has been working around the clock and it has been such an adjustment. And as much as I've always said "I'm going to learn how to meditate" I've never actually done it. My brother has always done this, and is able to stay in his meditative state even if he is in a loud environment. Ah-ma-zing! Me? Not so much. So right now, as we are going through this transition, and I am adjusting to being in charge all.the.time.... I just really CRAVE quiet. And some REAL sleep would be great too. *sigh*

Perhaps, tonight, if I can stay awake past my lovies, I will shut the door and soak in a bubbly tub... and enjoy the quiet...

Thank you for this beautiful reminder, and for contributing it to {Magic of the Mundane}!

  14. I love to spend about a 1/2 hour of quite time each day right when I get home from work. No tv, no computer, no music.... just sitting, looking out the window. Great post!
