Wool Gathering

So last week I mentioned that I'm working on a new project - Yeah, I know it's not Thursday. I'm a bit late.  Anyway...It started with this...
Freshly sheared wool...then it got a bath...
A bubble bath no less....cause I'm all about the pampering.
That was some seriously dirty wool.....Ewww.....
So then my tub became equally dirty......
That is seriously gross.

But the wool looks pretty good.
Soft, fluffy wool....pretty.

So here's the fun part...My bathroom seriously smelled like a zoo during this the stuff they shovel up.  Evidently this little lamb named Cadbury decided to roll in some stinky mess. And I think I'm going to wash the wool again cause there is a  There is just no polite way around it.  That wool smelled like poo and a little time in the sun did NOT help. So I'm back to square one of washing wool.  For those of you a bit more experienced than many times have you washed your wool? Inquiring in mine...would like to know.  Does that smell get washed away? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

  1. depending upon the fleece, i usually wash at least 2-3 times. for real :) i also usually do it in a big wash tub outside so i don't have to smell the barnyard aroma (we can find the big tubs cheap around here as they're used for holding crawfish when you have a boil).

  2. I once saw in a book that the woman actually washed her wool in a creek! Imagine all the stuff washing on down and actually being good for the creek's ecosystem. It's been a long time, but I think I washed, rinsed, washed, rinsed, etc. until the water ran clear. Maybe try to spray some Fabreze on it? What breed of wool is it? ((hugs)), Teresa :-)

  3. Yuck - when I see the state some of our sheep get into...
How virtuous you will feel when you finally tame that fleece into yarn xx

  4. Ewww yuck! But I do understand. I've washed mine 2-3 times before it was clean. Good luck and put out some candles. :-)

  5. Oh, look at you and all your wool! I wish I had wool instead of produce.
I do wish we lived closer, I think we would have so much fun.
Yes, I do think you are my long, lost twin!

  6. My my my that is very dirty water!! I'm sure once it's clean and dry it's going to be beautiful all spun up! I bet you are in your happy place :)

  7. yuch!!!! If I ever had any inkling of going from sheep to shawl, i think you just squelched it! :)

  8. Yikes! Have fun the second time around :)

  9. Now that looks like fun!!! LOL. It will all be worth it in the end though. I usually just keep washing and rinsing and washing and rinsing until the water is clean and clear. I use dawn dish soap. It cuts through the muck pretty good and I add vinegar too. Wool washing is not for the faint of heart....that's for sure!

  10. Those little lambs are quite the little piggies, haha!
